What a wonderful example of good farming practice here in the Borders - and how refreshing to be reminded that many farmers care more about wildlife than most townies. I agree 100% that we should be deeply grateful to farmers - not just fo9r feeding us - but because over the last 1000 years you have created tbe British countryside and sustained its wildlife.

I think you have a book in you - waiting to be written,
John

As 'Spam' was becoming a serious problem, I have had to upgrade the guestbook. Unfortunately not all previous entries can be incorporated.

hi - I am an English teacher in France and I work in an agricultural college. I came across your site recently and it's the first thing I have found in nine years of working which has really enthused my students (who specialise in milk production and cereals). Thank you very much on their behalf and also on behalf of a desperate teacher (me).RegardsJill

I hope you don't mind me contacting you via the guestbook, but as you have run an Instromet station for a good many years I thought you might be able to help me with a few problems I am encountering in setting up the system. The hardware has all been wired up correctly and weather data is being received by the weather display perfectly. However, I am having difficulty in establishing communication between the PC (the Met4Net program) and the datalogger. Our technician is also puzzled as the datalogger was tested prior to arrival. In starting the server all I get is a flashing red light.Any suggestions would be gratefully received. For the benefit of other readers, I can thoroughly recommend the Instromet system - they are durable and once up and running very reliable.

An excellent site. My mother's maiden name was Magaret Mitchell Elliott. I believe the Mitchell's farmed at Letham Shank through the 19 th century perhaps into the early 20th. For example, at Norham there are cemetary records for Isabella Mitchell who died at Letham Shank in 1860. In the 1881 census George Mitchell (my gr gr grandfather) is at 3 Letham Cottage while his uncle Andrew Mitchell is at Letham Farm House. From information in the 1901 census I believe the Mitchell's also owned a property known as West Mains Farm, Norham. While the maternal side of the family the Mitchells were farmers the other side of my mother's family - Elliott - were gamekeepers with both her father and grandfather working as keepers for Lord Joicey at Ford & Etal Estates. Thanks again for an excellent site...
